Metabolix Announces Bioverse as First Aquatic Market Customer for Mirel(TM) Bioplastics

Mar 11, 2009

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Mar 11, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Metabolix, Inc. (NASDAQ: MBLX) today announced that Bioverse, a developer of natural products to assist bioremediation of commercial and residential water features, has contracted to purchase injection molding-grade Mirel(TM) bioplastic resin. It will be used for producing a new biodegradable version of its AquaSphere PRO pond and lake treatment system for golf courses. The specific terms of the contract with Telles, the joint venture between Metabolix and Archer Daniels Midland Company that produces Mirel bioplastics, have not been disclosed.

Bob Findlen, Vice President Sales and Marketing of Telles, stated, "We are looking forward to working with Bioverse, whose AquaSphere product application demonstrates how Mirel bioplastics add functionality, economic benefits and environmental value to an already successful product."

Bioverse is the first customer announcement in the marine and fresh water market, one of six targeted markets for Telles. Bioverse's approach is a good example of a customer leveraging the unique environmental benefits of Mirel over the traditional petroleum based materials used in this market. This demonstrates that thick injection molded parts made from Mirel, as well as film and sheet applications will biodegrade in fresh water. This is a unique selling advantage. It is indicative of how beneficial the use of Mirel can be in reducing persistent plastic debris in the marine environment.

The AquaSphere is a submersible, plastic-enclosed water treatment system. Mirel resins are the only high performance thermoplastics available today which are certified to meet Vincotte OK Biodegradable Water Standard for natural fresh water environments. Bioverse's selection of Mirel resins for their AquaSphere product helps them to provide their customers a more eco-friendly, biodegradable, maintenance free alternative versus conventional chemical treatments.

Dr. Conrad Schmidt, CEO of Bioverse, said, "The Mirel-made AquaSphere Pro by Bioverse is a breakthrough solution for the treatment of stagnant, contaminated water. Customers want environmentally friendly solutions for water health and clarity, and we are projecting increased sales with our new product."

The new patented AquaSphere Pro delivery system for treating and maintaining water health and clarity is now biodegradable. Customers simply toss the biodegradable sphere into a stagnant water area, or golf course pond and walk away. Bioverse is dedicated to developing and delivering eco-friendly, non-chemical water treatment programs. Incorporating Mirel Bioplastics into the AquaSphere Pro product line allows customers access to an integrated time release treatment program that delivers safe environmental solutions for contaminated and stagnant water.
